Botulinum toxin is a substance derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that causes muscle paralysis. This substance has been treated and converted into botulinum toxin A (onabotulinumtoxin A) in order to be used in aesthetics to produce a paralyzing effect on specific facial muscles in order to prevent, eliminate, or reduce the appearance of expression lines and certain types of creases.
Although Allergan Aesthetics (an AbbVie company) marketed the first type of botulinum toxin under the brand name “Botox” and is well-known for being the first, it is not the only company offering this product on the market. On the aesthetic market, in addition to Botox®, there are numerous injections of botulinum toxin type A, such as Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®, that produce the same effect as the original. At Universal, some of them are used interchangeably.
Although we use Botox® at Universal Laser Center, the most popular aesthetic toxin is Jeuveau®, which has superior results and a more affordable price for clients, as well as a longer-lasting effect and FDA approval.
